Pilar de la Horadada is a young town, but its history stretches back to the Roman Empire. Even if the town became a self governing town when it achieved its independence from Orihuela in 1986, Pilar de la Horadada has lived pirates incursions and pillaging in the 16th century and has been a stop for Romans on their way to Cadiz through the Via Augusta. The welcoming nature of its people and their fighting personality has made Pilar de la Horadada a town with traditions and celebrations in which all its inhabitants participate and share proudly with visitors.
The cultivation of vegetables, the esparto grass and flower production are three of the deeply rooted pillars of culture of our town, being the second largest cut flower grower of the country. Furthermore, the rich and healthy.vegetables that are grown in our city are also well known. The esparto grass is a material which only few people have the ability to work with, but those who work with it or have done in the past, have left us some beautiful esparto works, some of which can be seen in the Ethnological Archaeological Municipal Museum Gratiniano Baches.
Pilar de la Horadada has 5 km. coast where cozy coves and large beaches of fine sand are mixed with transparent waters in which you can enjoy a peaceful and refreshing swim during the four seasons of the year. From north to south our beaches have received the distinctive "Q" of Tourism Quality Organism (Qualitur) and four of them have blue flag: Las Higuericas, El Conde, Jesuitas y Mil Palmeras. Because of our waters, so many people choose us to practise water sports such as diving, sailing, kite-surfing or just swimming. If you want to learn to sail, you can attend the sailing courses organised by the Yacht ClubTorre Horadada. And if you only want to fish on the beach, remember that you can do it after bath hours.
But if what you like is to walk more than swimming or water sports, you have some routes that will take you until our beaches or through our coastline. You can go either on foot or by bike. The are the following
